Katarina Wit first started skating at age five. Her talents soon became evident as she enrolled into a school specifically designed for kids with a flair for sports in Karl-Marx-Stadt. The school where she was enrolled she met her coach Jutta Muler. Witt was able to make her debut year in 1982 after she finished second at the World Championships held in Copenhagen. Since that time the elegance and grace of her skating captured the eye of all. She began to dominate this particular sport. Olympic triumph at the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the women's gold medal in figure skating following a close-fought competition. The following year she was able to win an even tougher competition. Witt actually fell short of the free skating contest, however she was awarded the gold medal based upon her results in the mandatory figures as well as the short-form program. Witt became the first female to take home a gold medal in both women's and men's figure-skating since Sonja Hiene. Hall of Fame Witt was allowed to resume skating after her accomplishments in the film industry as an actress. She competed in Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. She placed seventh but enchanted the crowd even though she didn't win an award. Witt was elected into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1995.
